Yesterday, the annual Haytime Tea celebration took place at High Hirst Woodmeadow project.
This event celebrates three weeks of hard work from all the volunteers who helped to mow the meadow by and bale hay by hand – mostly during a heatwave!
It was great to see so many of our volunteers on the day, including several of their children who’d had a great time helping with the hay making.
Food was accompanied by beautiful music from the Hebden Bridge’s ‘Beginners Folk’ group, which included High Hirst scythers, Beck (who led the group), Cel and Clare.
There were speeches from Cllr Steve Woodhead, Chair of the Local Environment & Climate Committee and the Mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council as well as Gareth Muir, Local Environment and Allotments Officer.
The former Chair of the Friends of High Hirst Woodmeadow, Neil Diment, said:
‘Despite the weather, we all enjoyed a splendid Hay Time tea yesterday afternoon, courtesy of Hebden Royd Town Council and organised by Gareth Muir (Local Environment and Allotments Officer).
It was a fitting end to HHWM’s most successful Haytime yet. This year, the team were able to mow both the upper and lower parts of the meadow, making approximately 70 bales of hay. These will be used by Full of Joy Sanctuary, for winter feed and bedding.
