Celebrating National Meadows Day at High Hirst Woodmeadow

Hebden Royd Town Council (HRTC) are delighted to announce a free, family-friendly day events in celebration of National Meadows Day.

The nature and conservation themed events are taking place on Saturday 4th July 2026, at HRTC-managed ancient grassland, and local wildlife site, High Hirst Woodmeadow.

Whilst all events are free of charge, advance booking for the Ecology and Local History Walks is essential.

Children’s Nature-Based Activities

10am-3pm (drop-in anytime). Free nature-based kids’ sessions, led by Dodnaze Community Association Forest School.

Ecology Walks

10.30am-11.30pm and 1pm-2pm. Join Steve Hindle our local expert ecologist, walking through High Hirst Woodmeadow to gain invaluable insights into the unique flora and fungi that inhabit this ancient grassland.

Scything Demonstration

12pm. Watch High Hirst Woodmeadow volunteers demonstrate this ancient, beautiful and restorative meadow management skill. Drop in. No booking required.

Local History Walk

11am and 1:30pm. Led by local historian Paul Knights. Join us for a guided walk to learn about the history of High Hirst Woodmeadow.

Dry Stone Walling Demonstration

Throughout the day. An introduction to this heritage craft which not only creates functional boundaries in the Woodmeadow, but also provides valuable habitat for various plants and animals.

Additional Information

We kindly ask that guests wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the weather, as the events will take place outdoors.

Accessible toilets will be available at Dodnaze Community Centre from 10am-4pm.

The best way to get to us is to walk or use public transport. The 595 bus runs twice an hour (20mins and 50mins past the hour), up from the railway station via Commercial Street. It’s a five minute journey and drops you off right next to the Community Centre.

For guests with limited mobility, limited parking is available on Manor Drive, Dodnaze.

We ask visitors to please not park on Sandy Gate as it restricts access for residents and through traffic.
