Dear Maurice
On behalf of Hebden Royd Town Council, I wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with the French people over the murder of ten staff of Charlie Hebdo and two police officers by 'religious' extremists.
The perpetrators of this atrocity have no regard for human life. It is utterly wrong that they claim inspiration from Islam, whose culture preserved classical learning and developed scientific inquiry when European civilisation had collapsed. They are not representative of the modern Islamic community, which has an important role to play in shaping the future of Europe, along with other religious and non-religious people.
Hebden Royd Town Council and the people of the area stand shoulder to shoulder with French citizens during this disturbing time.
Please accept our very best wishes for the future and continuing friendship.
Yours sincerely
Cllr Jonathan Timbers
Mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council
