Hebden Bridge Flood Alleviation Scheme

Since the 2015 Boxing Day Floods, the Environment Agency, Calderdale MBC and partners have been working on proposals for the Hebden Bridge Flood Alleviation Scheme. The aim of the scheme is to reduce chance of flooding in Hebden Bridge in any given year from 20% to 2%, better protecting approximately 400 properties from flooding.

A community consultation was held in 2017, with the results feeding into the current Scheme.

The current scheme is budgeted at £81 million, with a four-year programme of works currently due to begin in early 2027. It will include the construction of flood barriers in St Pol Car park, Bridge Gate and Old Gate, raising and strengthening of river walls and the repair and reinforcement of several properties.

Information about the Scheme, including answers to Frequently Asked Questions, can be found below.

Hebden Royd Town Council agreed at the Full Council meeting on 16th October 2025 not to object to the planning application.

A meeting of the Calderdale Council Planning Committee approved the Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS) on Tuesday 17th February.

We know that this is an uncertain time for the town, with some members of the community having concerns around disruption, loss of parking, the potential loss of use of a section of Calder Holmes Park and preserving the town’s unique character.

As a consultee, Hebden Royd Town Council has no direct influence over decision making on the scheme. However, our Town Councillors are committed to working to ensure that the FAS delivers the best possible outcomes for everyone. Anyone with concerns about FAS at any stage is welcomed to contact their Ward Councillors to discuss how we can support you.
