Drystone Walling at High Hirst Woodmeadow

Sunday 12th October saw volunteers drystone walling on High Hirst Woodmeadow Project

Under the instruction of local waller Dave Glover, the volunteers repaired a section of the wall which separates the ‘pasture’ from the ‘meadow’.

Drystone walling is a traditional countryside craft with a rich history in the area. The wall has fallen into a state of disrepair and will be rebuilt over time to provide a habitat for lichens, mosses and invertebrates. Other sections of the wall will remain as ‘tumbledown’ as they currently have communities of ferns and heath species such as bilberries which are well established.

Further volunteer activities are planned on the site, if you are interested in getting involved, please contact Gareth Muir, Local Environment and Allotment Officer at gareth.muir@hebdenroydtowncouncil.gov.uk to register your interest.
