Hebden Royd Town Council (HRTC) and the Friends of High Hirst Woodmeadow are pleased to announce a diverse line-up of FREE nature and conservation-based community events, celebrating National Meadows Day on Saturday, July 5, 2025.
This family-friendly nature fun day is taking place on HRTC-managed ancient grassland, and local wildlife site, High Hirst Woodmeadow.

CHILDREN’S NATURE-BASED ACTIVITIES
10am-3pm (drop-in anytime). Led by Dodnaze Community Association Forest School.
FREE nature-based kid’s sessions including hapa zome, clay and willow crafts and a mini-beast hunt.
ECOLOGY WALKS
10.30am-11.30pm and 1pm-2pm. Led by Steve Hindle
Join Steve Hindle our local expert ecologist, walking through High Hirst Woodmeadow to gain invaluable insights into the unique flora and fungi that inhabit this ancient grassland.
SCYTHING DEMONSTRATION
12pm. Friends of High Hirst Woodmeadow
Watch Friends of High Hirst members demonstrate this ancient, beautiful and restorative meadow management skill. Drop in. No booking required.
LOCAL HISTORY WALK
3pm. Led by local historian Paul Knights. Join us for a guided walk about the history of High Hirst Woodmeadow.
DRY STONE WALLING DEMONSTRATION
Throughout the day. An introduction to this heritage craft which not only creates functional boundaries in the Woodmeadow, but also provides valuable habitat for various plants and animals.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Accessible toilet facilities will be available at nearby Dodnaze Community Centre from 9am – 4pm.
We kindly ask that guests wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the weather, as the events will take place outdoors.
Limited parking for guests with limited mobility is available on Manor Drive, Dodnaze, while all other attendees are welcome to use the nearby Hebden Bridge IOU Hostel/Birchcliffe Centre car park, located just five minutes away on foot.
